SPRING FLOOD WATCH

Rule

Interactive mapA wet fall in 2010 combined with high snowfall amounts this winter and good potential for spring rain have significantly increased the potential for flooding in Edina.

The City has met with Minnehaha Creek and Nine Mile Creek Watershed Districts about the potential for flooding within each district. Both Watershed Districts performed hydrologic modeling of the creeks and highlighted areas of potential flooding. These areas can be found in the interactive map or at the links below.

Many factors influence flooding, including the rate of snow melt and precipitation received as the weather warms. All property owners near the creeks or other water bodies should assess the risk to their land and buildings. For more information, please contact Jesse Struve at 952-903-5713 or jstruve@ci.edina.mn.us.

Based on the modeling results from the Watershed Districts, the City has determined that some homes are at risk for flooding. Owners of those at-risk homes can follow these procedures for obtaining sandbags:

  • For at-risk homes, the City will try to have filled sandbags and poly ready to be delivered.

The City cannot guarantee it will have enough filled sandbags, so residents are encouraged to help fill them. There may not be enough sandbags for all homes that could be impacted by flooding.

  • If requested, sandbags will be delivered to the front yard or driveway. The City will not place sandbags for homeowners, but can advise as to the placement.

  • Home owners must return sandbags to the pallets and stack them appropriately in the driveway when flooding threat is diminished and contact the City for pick up.

*PLEASE NOTE: The maps above are for general informational purposes only and should not be relied on for any official purpose. Prediction of the extent or duration of flooding is imprecise and based on many assumptions about snow and ice conditions and how water will move across land and within surface water channels and basins. All future flooding scenarios are also affected significantly by weather conditions, including, but notlimited to, temperatures and patterns of snowfall and rainfall. Any indication of how far flood waters may reach or how long they may remain there, generally or with respect to a specific property, is for illustration only. It does not represent the most likely scenario and the City of Edina does not represent any particular level of probability associated with it. Property owners and other interested people should rely on a licensed surveyor or other professional retained for specific advice concerning their properties and should contact the City for information and assistance concerning federal flood insurance, flood risks and response. The City of Edina strictly disclaims any and all warranties on use of the information in these maps for any purpose.
