Recreation Programs

The City of Edina offers a number of athletic and recreation programs for children throughout the year. Among the programs offered are in the summer are tennis, playgrounds, nature camp, Safety Camp and field trips. Winter programs include Tea for Two, nature camp and field trips.

Registration for 2010 summer programs began Feb. 1 for residents and May 1 for non-residents. Register online or in person at Edina City Hall.

Adult programs

  • Adult Tennis Instruction (Beginner )

    For beginning players, or those who haven’t played for several years, the City of Edina offers the USTA 1-2-3 program. Tennis balls are provided but bring your own racquet.

  • Adult Tennis Instruction (Intermediate)

    For adults who have some tennis experience and would like to raise their level of play. On-court instruction includes attention to specific strokes, fast-paced drills, singles and doubles play and friendly competition. The program provides an opportunity for participants to improve their game and meet other players. Tennis balls are provided but bring your own racquet.

  • Basketball TRAIL

    Dribble, shoot and score with Edina Basketball. Each week we will develop skills before hitting the floor for a game. This is a great program for you to stay in shape and learn the game of basketball. Ages 16 and older are welcome to register. Don’t forget to tell us your t-shirt size on the registration form. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Cheerleading Clinic-Spring Break

    This is a crash course in cheerleading athletics! Children or teens ages 8 and up are welcome. Kids and teens will learn some basic cheers, dance moves, and tumbling. Be ready for fun music, high energy activities, and encouraging instructors. Please wear comfortable clothing for movement. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Larry Nelson Adaptive Golf Program TRAIL

    Beginners will learn about golf etiquette, basic skills and rules with experienced volunteer golfers. Golfers are supported on the course with volunteers based on their needs, ages 10 and older. This is an AR&LE class.

    Class meets 7:30 pm to dark, April 30 and May 7; 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Braemar Golf Dome

  • Larry Nelson Adaptive League and Advanced Lessons- TRAIL

    This program is designed for golfers who are independent on the course with little supervision from volunteers. After 2 sessions of skill building we will hit the course. Golfers must be referred to the program. This is an AR&LE class.

    Fridays; April 30 to June 25 (no class on May 28) 6:30 p.m. - dark April 30 and May 7; 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Braemar Golf Dome.

  • Spring Break Sampler for Ages 8-15

    Youth and teens ages 8-15 are welcome to sample a variety of spring time activities. Do a planting at the Arneson Acres Greenhouse, go on an outdoor scavenger hunt, make a yummy snack and create crafts and science projects. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Super Sundays: Board Games, Snacks and a Service Project

    Grab your friends, head out on the town and meet new people. Super Sundays is a social group for teen’s of all ability levels ages 13-22. This is an AR&LE class.

    A variety of board games (bring a favorite if you have one), a healthy snack, and a service project will round out this day of fun!

  • Super Sundays: Centennial Lakes Fishing and Pizza

    Grab your friends, head out on the town and meet new people. Super Sundays is a social group for teen’s of all ability levels ages 13-22. This is an AR&LE class.

    To conclude the Super Sunday season, our annual afternoon of fishing and pizza will no doubt be a highlight for most! We will provide fishing poles (bring your own if you have one), bait, pizza, pop, and game tokens from Chuck E. Cheese.

  • Super Sundays: Fudruckers Restaurant

    Grab your friends, head out on the town and meet new people. Super Sundays is a social group for teen’s of all ability levels ages 13-22. This is an AR&LE class.

    Bring your appetite for a late lunch or snack at this casual restaurant in Bloomington. You need to bring your own money to cover your meal (suggested amount $20) and a few extra dollars if you want to play arcade games.

  • Super Sundays: Science Museum of Minnesota

    Grab your friends, head out on the town and meet new people. Super Sundays is a social group for teen’s of all ability levels ages 13-22. This is an AR&LE class.

    Check out the interesting exhibits, try hands-on science experiments, and be amazed by the pre-historic fossil and dinosaur displays. We will travel by bus to St. Paul.

  • Lawn Games Galore

    Learn and play favorite back yard games like bocce ball and croquet plus new ones! Each week will try a different game that you can play at home with family and friends. Ages 7 and up are welcome, groups will be determined by age. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Theatrical Performance Camp- "Sound of Music"

    After viewing the movie, actors will learn lines and songs, as well as create the sets for the exciting performance that is held on the last day of camp. This program is open to ages 13-21. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Water Aerobics TRAIL

    Get ready for some active aerobic strengthening, stretching, range-of-motion exercises all in the comfort of the Edinborough Park Pool. This program can help boost fitness levels and minimize the impact on your bones/muscles as you exercise. The pool has a chair lift for easy entrance and exit. Ages 16 and up are welcome, group home staff bring more than 2 participants must provide support in the water. This is an AR&LE class.

  • Super Sundays: Bell Museum of Natural History

    Explore this museum’s habitat dioramas and experience the wide-open prairie, the shadowy coniferous forest, and the shores of Lake Superior. Museum interpreters will bring these displays to life in a guided tour followed by some unstructured time in the "Touch and See Room." Meet/Return Edina Senior Center, Bus will take us to the museum

  • Fishing Clinic

    Do you like fishing? Do you want to learn more? Then you are invited to Centennial Lakes Park wants to teach kids about fishing! Children will play interactive games, get their hands dirty handling bait and have the opportunity to catch a fish. Parents are encouraged to attend and help out. Parents will fish for free, but must have a MN fishing license. Register online at www.CentennialLakesPark.com. For ages 6 and older.

  • Mini Masters Putting Contest

    Centennial Lakes Park will host the second annual Mini Masters. Participants along with parent/guardian caddie, will play an 18-hole round of putt-putt. Participants will compete, while their "caddie" offers putting tips. Awards and snacks will be handed out after the event in the Centrum Building. Register at www.CentennialLakesPark.com.   • Make Believe Stories

    Does your child have an active imagination? Children will explore their inner storyteller to create their own story book. Draw a cat with a funny hat who meets a special friend on the way to the zoo, or draw a red fish that discovers adventure in the library, or . . . .

    Gin Weidenfeller has extensive experience guiding pre-school aged children through the creative process. She teaches classes in Eden Prairie, Plymouth and Minnetonka as well as Edina. Children participate without parents, parents are welcome to bring lunch and eat with their child after class.

    This is a great family friendly activity; this popular recreation pursuit brings technology and nature together. This event is geared toward youth age 8 and up with an adult, grandparents welcome too. Come find out what a cache is, where it can be properly hidden and how to record its location using a Global Positioning Unit (GPS) along with where to post the coordinates. Test your skills and find some caches already hidden in Rosland Park. Enter a chance to win your own GPS Unit. Class taught by Three Rivers Park District staff (event held rain or shine).   • Hip Hop 4 Teens

    Be real and have fun! Get the scoop on the freshest choreography combinations and jam to the hottest beats around. No previous dance experience needed. Wear loose clothes and athletic shoes, no black soled shoes please. Bring a water bottle. For ages 12 to 16.

  • Hip Hop for the Young

    Do you love moving your body? Learn some dance moves and jam to hoppin’music. Wear loose clothes and tennis shoes, black soled shoes are not allowed in the gym or senior center dance room. For ages 3 to 6.

  • Hip Hop Stylez

Through basic exercise, simple dance steps, and fun games, you will keep it movin.’ This is a great way to start your weekend instead of sitting in front of the TV. Wear loose clothes and athletic shoes, no black soles please. For ages 3 to 6 with adult.

  • Keep it Movin' - Family Style (ages 7 and up)

  • Mom & Me Spa Party

    This is the perfect Mother’s Day treat for half the price of a spa trip. Invite your other mom/daughter friends and don’t forget grandmothers to join you for a special spa afternoon. Your Once Upon a Star pampering experience includes: Paraffin Hand Wax, Express Manicure, Express Pedicure, Face Cleanse, Mask & Conditioning. Discuss the importance of great skin care and stress relief. Guests will also be treated to a soft hair up-do (with tips for doing at home) and a take-home spa treasure!     Be a cartoon artist, draw, paint, collage and fold paper to create your favorite characters or make your own imaginary one. For ages 3 - 6.

  • Spring Break- American Idol Party

    Be a POP Star! Come dressed in your funkiest Fashion. Your Once Upon a Star makeover will include: a rainbow-glitter hair up- do, sparkly fingernails, and dazzling eye jewels. Also, choose your favorite sugar-glitter tattoo. After a jewelry beading craft, we’ll end with music. Bring your singing voice/partner if you want to test your voice on our microphone. You’ll feel like a POP star at this party. For ages 6 to 12.

  • Spring Time Tea Party

    Dress fancy with a special adult in your life and join Once Upon a Star’s Costumed Kim as Fancy Nancy for a dress up tea party. Learn manners and how to have a proper tea party. Together you will enjoy story time, share a snack, pour juice from a teapot and end with a FANCY dance! Boys, girls, moms, dads, grandparents are all welcome! For ages 3 to 7 with adult.

  • Teddy Bear Picnic

    Calling all kids and teddy bears; this program is for you and your favorite teddy bear or stuffed friend. Listen to teddy bear stories, sing and dance to teddy bear songs, go on a bear hunt, make a teddy bear craft and more. Bring your own picnic lunch to share after the program is over. For ages 2 to 5 with parent or grandparent.

  • Tinkerbell, Pixie Hollow and Fairies

    Be a Fairy artist as we paint flowers, rainbows, draw fuzzy friends, sculpt clay animals and tinker in the workshop. For ages 3 - 6.

  • Waddlin' Tots- Intergenerational Fun

    Friday nights need a change? Don’t have the energy at the end of the week? Let us do the work and enjoy fun a time together without making the mess at your house. Cutting . . . pasting . . . and coloring . . . there is so much for you to create and explore. Meet new friends, learn through music, and create fun snacks. With all the activities this class is a sure hit Friday nights. For ages 3 to 6 with adult.

  • Where the Wild Things Are

    Go on an adventure with Max, paper fold a mask or puppet, create your own picture book and marble paper with Japanese inks. For ages 3 - 6.

  • Summer Youth Programs

  • Basketball

    This fun, skill-intensive program is designed with the beginner to intermediate player in mind. Using our progression curriculum and focusing on the whole player, we teach your child the skills they need both on and off the court to be a better athlete. Through drills and games we make it an unforgettable camp experience for your son or daughter. All participants receive a t-shirt and a merit award. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 10:1. Participants should bring appropriate clothing, two snacks, a water bottle, gym shoes and sunscreen. For ages 7 - 12.

  • Challengers

    This program is for youth ages 10 -11 who want to be challenged! Tuesdays will be filled with team and individual challenges similar to popular TV shows like Survivor and Amazing Race, encouraging participants to work together while having fun. Field trips are taken by bus on Thursdays to places such as Centennial Lakes Park for mini-golf, and swimming at the Edina Aquatic Center. Field trip information will be sent before the program starts.

  • Cheerleading Camp

    From "USA" to "Edina Hornets are the best" the Edina High School cheerleaders and coaches will teach youth ages 5 to 12 cheer aerobics, jumps, motion techniques, cheers, dances and beginning or intermediate stunts. Each participant will receive a T-Shirt and certificate. They will perform on the last day of camp, as well as in the Edina 4th of July Parade.

  • Fab 4 & 5

    This program for 4 & 5 year-olds offers daily themes developed to foster a child’s creativity, imagination and curiosity. During each of the 5 weeks we will offer a new adventure filled with crafts, stories, songs and other age appropriate activities.

  • Firearm Safety Training

    The Edina Park and Recreation Department offers the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Firearm Safety Training to youth ages 11 and older. Parents of students are encouraged to observe the class.

  • Highlands Explorers

    This program is for 8-10 year olds who are enthusiastic about nature and the outdoors! Activities at Highlands Park include searching for frogs and bugs, hiking and exploring the woods, and time with a naturalist. Participants will also enjoy traditional games and sports, plus a weekly visit from the arts and crafts specialist.

  • Lights, Camera, Action

    Are you ready for the stage? Have a blast finding out! Spend a week putting together your own special play. Make your own costumes, prepare an amazing set, sing songs, and play some fun imagination games and more. Parents join us for the last class presentation of the play! For ages 3 to 6.

  • Mini Hawks

    This multi-sport program gives young children ages 4 to 7 a positive first step into athletics. Baseball, basketball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun. Our Mini-hawks games and activities were designed to allow campers to explore balance, movement, hand/eye coordination and skill development at their own pace. Skyhawks staff is trained to handle the specific needs of these young athletes. All participants receive a t-shirt and a merit award. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 8:1. Participants should bring appropriate clothing, two snacks, a water bottle, running shoes and sunscreen.

  • Playground Extra

    Calling all playground kids! If you enjoyed the first 6 weeks of playground activities, sign up for another week!! This program is offered at select sites and will include more crafts, more games and more fun! This year’s theme will be "Heroes and Supers."

  • Playground Program

    The goal of the Edina Playground program is to offer supervised and structured activities that focus on fun, physical fitness and socialization. We offer a variety of themed activities to keep kids physically active and creative. This program is designed for children ages 6 to10. To be eligible children must have completed kindergarten.

    Weekly Themes for 2010: Passport to Fun, Galactic Voyages, Krazy Kool Water Days, Move It, Into the Wild, Motion, Music and More.

  • Safety Camp

    Don’t miss out on Edina’s Safety Camp - you get one chance to come since camp is ONLY for youth entering fourth grade. Find out that safety is fun through interactive sessions on a variety of topics! Campers will learn about fire, personal, water, electric, internet, animal safety and more. Each camper will receive a T-shirt, snack and a pizza lunch. The Edina Police, Fire and Park and Recreation departments are pleased to sponsor this event.

  • Small Wonders

    This camp is for children entering kindergarten or grade 1. Three Rivers Park District staff will take campers through the incredible journey of fish. At fish camp you will learn how to identify Minnesota fish, learn what fish eat, make fish crafts, and more. Campers will also play fish games, do water quality studies, and go fishing. Get your child hooked on fishing through this camp!

  • Soccer

    This is a fun skills program for youth ages 4 - 6. Drills and games will make this camp fun for all boys and girls. Participant will receive a t-shirt and a merit award. Participants should bring appropriate clothing, a water bottle and a snack.

  • Super 6 & 7

    Designed for 6 & 7 year-olds who enjoy playing in a fun and structured environment. Group games, creative crafts, and other age appropriate activities are planned daily. Parents will check children in and out each day.

  • Travelin' Teens

    If you are an active middle schooler who is up for fun and adventure, then this program is for you! Participants’ ages 11-14 years will travel on a bus to a different place each day, supervised by energetic leaders. Swimming at a beach, learning a new outdoor skill with Three Rivers Park District, or mini-golfing in Edina are a few of the trips. Chances are that you will meet some new friends, explore some cool places and have some great stories to tell afterwards! Trip information will be sent before the program starts.

  • Edina Team Tennis League

    For boys and girls ages 11 to 14, the City of Edina offers USTA competitive team play. The league is for players with tournament experience and those who wish to gain experience. All participants should be familiar with the basics of the game, including scoring.

    Matches: Tuesdays with perhaps a few matches on Thursdays, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. at the Edina High School and yet to be determined locations for away matches.

  • Tennis Camp - 2010

    The City of Edina offers a week-long tennis camp for beginner- and intermediate-level players ages 8-13. Class sizes are limited. The camp will conclude with a tournament and a pizza party on the last day.

    Advanced Intermediate lessons are for students who have a mental and physical grasp of tennis fundamentals. Intermediate lessons are for ages 9 and up. Students need to bring their own tennis racquets. Tennis balls are provided.

  • Youth Tennis Instruction (Beginner ages 7 and up)

    Beginner lessons teach students the basics of tennis, including ground strokes, service, net game and scoring from certified professional instructors. Beginner lessons are for ages 7 and up. Students need to bring their own tennis racquets. Tennis balls are provided.

  • Youth Tennis Instruction (Beginner ages 9 and up)

    Youth ages 9-17 can learn the captivating game of tennis from certified professional instructors. All players need to provide their own rackets. Tennis balls are provided. The instructor-to-student ratio is 1:5. Beginner Lessons teach students the basics of tennis, including ground strokes, service, net game and scoring.

  • Youth Tennis Instruction (Intermediate)

    Intermediate lessons focus on improving basic skills learned at the beginner level from certified professional instructors. Intermediate Lessons are for ages 8 and up. Students need to bring their own tennis racquets. Tennis balls are provided.

  • Youth Tennis Instruction (Pee Wee)

    Pee Wees offers a fun filled introduction to tennis for 5 to 7 years olds from certified professional instructors. The City of Edina will provide rackets to Pee Wee-level players. Tennis balls are provided.
