2012 Elections

The 2012 elections will include President of the United States, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, State Senator, State Representatives, county, judicial and local offices.

  • Primary – Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012
    Absentee Voting Begins June 29, 2012 for the Primary

  • General Election – Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012
    Absentee Voting Begins Sept. 21, 2012 for the General Election

Redistricting 2012

Following redistricting, Edina is in both the 3rd and 5th Congressional districts, State Senate District 49 and State House districts 49A and 49B as described below. Due to redistricting, some of Edina's precinct boundaries have changed. Check the map to see if you were affected or go to the Secretary of States's Polling Place finder at http://www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=1716 to find your correct pollying place.

Federal Legislative Districts

Edina is in two U.S. Congressional districts. District 3 includes Precincts 1A, 1B, 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15. District 5 inlcudes precincts 3, 4, 8, 9 and 14.

State Legislative Districts

Minnesota State Senate District 49 consists of all Edina precincts (1A through 19).
Minnesota House District 49A includes Edina Precincts 1A, 1B, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16 and 17*.
Minnesota House Disitrict 49B includes Edina Precincts 12, 13, 18* and 19.

*The boundary line between 49A and 49B bisects the York Plaza buildings located at 7200 and 7220 York Ave.

Municipal Election
Edina's municipal elections are nonpartisan and candidates run for their seats at large. Edina will hold its municipal election Nov. 6, 2012. Edina voters will elect their Mayor and two Council Members at the November General Election. Terms for these Council positions are four years beginning Jan. 1, 2013 and ending Dec. 31, 2017.

People interested in running for office in Edina must file an affidavit of candidacy. The filing period for affidavits of candidacy opens July 31, 2012 and closes Aug. 14, 2012.

To file for office, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • Candidate must be an eligible voter.

  • Is, or will be on assuming the office, 21 years of age or older.

  • Maintained residence in the district from which the candidate seeks election for 30 days before the general election.

Candidates must file an Affidavit of Candidacy and pay a $5 filing fee with the City Clerk's office at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., Edina, MN 55424. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, contact City Clerk Debra Mangen, 952-826-0408.

Campaign Lawn Signs
In a state general election year (even years), Edina’s sign ordinances are overruled by Minnesota Statutes 211B.045 from 46 days before the primary until 10 days after the general election, and campaign signs may be posted in any size and number. For 2012, this period begins June 29 and ends Nov. 16, 2012.

Minnesota State Statutes and the Edina City Code regulate the placement of campaign signs.

Following is a short summary of some of the regulations:

  • No signs shall be placed in the right-of-way without the permission of the property owner.

  • No signs should interfere with regulatory signs and traffic control devices.

  • Campaign signs posted in connection with the elections held at times other than a state general election are subject to the following:

  1.  Maximum Size - six square feet.

  2.  Maximum Number - one sign for each candidate per frontage.

  3.  Maximum Duration - 60 days prior to the election until seven days following the election.                

  • No sign shall be located in such a manner as to impede the view at intersections.

  • No sign shall be attached upon trees, rocks or power poles.

  • No sign shall be placed on parkland, or other publicly owned property or bridges/overpasses.
